TTV GUIDE

Torque Teno Virus-Based Immune Monitoring

Who We Are?

What Is Our Goal?

The TTV-GUIDE project is a European Union-funded consortium bringing together kidney transplant specialists, clinical virologists, project and clinical trial managers, bioethicists, and healthcare industry professionals. Our role, as the Ethics Group at the University of Granada, is to lead and represent Work Package 2 (WP2) of this European project.

Together, we aim to establish a novel and innovative tool for quantifying immune system activity in kidney transplant recipients using the Torque Teno virus (TTV).

What is the Torque Teno Virus (TTV)?

How do we do it?

El TTV está presente de forma natural en la sangre de todas las Torque Teno virus (TTV) is naturally present in the blood of healthy individuals and kidney transplant recipients, but it does not cause disease. When a patient’s immune system is strong, the TTV viral load is low, indicating a higher risk of organ rejection. Conversely, when the immune system is weak, the TTV viral load is high, indicating an increased risk of infection.

Within a randomized controlled clinical trial involving hundreds of kidney transplant recipients across Europe, TTV-guided dosing of immunosuppressive drugs will be evaluated.

Impact

Once implemented in routine clinical practice, TTV-guided therapy could reduce both infections and kidney transplant rejection. In the future, TTV may also benefit liver, heart, and lung transplant recipients, as well as guide treatment in autoimmune, infectious, and oncological diseases.
